Migration playbook
Playbook overview
This page describes the delivery pattern we use for database migration and integration engagements. It is not a generic methodology deck; each step maps to artifacts we have delivered on scoped consulting projects.
1. Inventory and risk register
We catalog databases, connection pools, cron-driven ETL, and orphaned read replicas. Risks are ranked by blast radius if a cutover window overruns.
2. Target architecture decision
Together we choose lift-and-shift, managed service migration, or refactor-with-strangler patterns. The decision is recorded with explicit trade-offs on latency, licensing, and operational ownership.
3. Tooling and automation
Schema diffs, data compare jobs, and rollback scripts live in your version control. We prefer idempotent jobs that operators can re-run during rehearsal weekends.
4. Rehearsal weekends
At least one full rehearsal occurs before production cutover. Timing notes feed the final maintenance window proposal.
5. Cutover and hypercare
During cutover we staff a war-room channel with your leads. Hypercare covers the first business week after traffic moves, focused on integration errors and slow queries surfaced in production.
